RIP Jayalalitha Jayaram: A Short Biography of Amma



December 5, 2016 was a heartbreaking day for the entire nation as Jayalalitha aka Amma passed away last night. She had been suffering from cardiac arrest since several months.



Jayalalitha was not just a politician and actress but more than that. Even she was idolized as Goddess for her followers. We are going to share a glimpse of her life so that you can be able to know more about this eminent personality:


The Beginning


Jayalalitha was born in Mysore on 24 February 1948. She hails from the respected Iyengar family where her father Jayaram was a lawyer by profession and her mother used in Tamil cinema. Even her grandfather was a surgeon. She had to shift to Bangalore after her father’s death. As fae as her education is concerned she completed her schooling from Bishop Cotton Girls' High School, Chennai, and Sacred Heart Matriculation School,  Chennai. She was such a great scholar that she earned received scholarship for higher studies from the Government of India after completing her matriculation in 1964. Apart from academics  she had been a great Bharatanatyam dancer and also had proficiency in various other dance forms like Manipuri, Mohiniyattam and Kathak. She had a great command over several languages like English, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Malayalam. One of the saddest part of her life was when her brother, Jayakumar, died in the early 1990s. And also Jayalalitha remained unmarried for her entire life.

As a Film Actress


Jayalalitha started her film career from her school days itself at the age of 15. She was influenced by her mother to join the film industry as she herself was a part of it. As a film actress Jayalalitha started her career with an English film ‘Epistle’ released in 1961. Her first official debut as a lead actress in Kannada film was in the film 'Chinnada Gombe' released in 1964. Her first official debut as a lead actress in Tamil film was in the film 'Vennira Aadai' released in 1965. And in In 1966, she began her career in the Telugu film 'Manushulu Mamathalu'. Jayalalitha also won Filmfare Awards for Best Actress for her performance in the films 'Pattikada Pattanama', 'Suryakanthi' and 'Sri Krishna Satya'. Izzat was a her first hindi film and that too paired opposite Dharmendra.




      As a Politician


       Jayalalitha began her political career in 1982 when she joined the AIADMK party founded by M.G. Ramachandran. In 1983 she was appointed as the Propaganda Secretary of the AIADMK. In 1984 for the first time she was elected as a member of the Rajya Sabha and luckily retained the seat till 1989. Later she was appointed as a member of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly in 1989 from the Bodinayakkanur constituency and also became the the first lady to become the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu .In 1991 Jayalalitha became the youngest Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and her tenure continued till 1996. Since then lot many things have occurred with her political scenario but the thing worth noticing is that In the history of Indian politics Jayalalitha had been the only lady chief minister of India who was appointed as chief minister for 6 times .


     The Controversy


  Jayalalitha was also known her 18-year-old disproportionate assets controversy in which she was accused of keeping disproportionate assets of Rs. 66.65 crore. She was convicted and sentenced to four years of jail and fined Rs. 100 crore for corruption by a trial court in 27 September 2014. After that Jayalalitha filed an appeal against the trial court decision in the Karnataka High Court. Later the charges were held “not sustainable” by the special bench of the Karnataka High Court and she was acquitted by the Karnataka High Court on 11 May, 2015.

       The End



  It was September 22 when Jayalalitha started complaining of fever and dehydration and immediately admitted to Apollo Hospital. It seemed all right when doctors announced that her condition is in control and had fully recovered. But on December 4 she suffered a cardiac arrest and her condition was extremely critical with no possible recovery. After spending 73 days undergoing treatment in Apollo Hospitals she passed away last night. She dies at the age of 68. She will be always remembered as Amma by her to millions of her fans and followers in the state.
