HIV, A Social Disease!

HIV and it’s prevention

 The Picture
One has HIV, one doesn’t deserve to live. This has been the traditional mentality of certain orthodox communities in the world and this sure, needs to change today. A person suffering from ACQUIRED IMMUNODEFICIENCY SYNDROME ( AIDS) isn’t necessarily someone having multiple sexual encounters with multiple partners, This conventional train of thoughts need to stop now. With an attempt to put some light of the day on this highly disputable social topic, here’s everything you need to know about HIV and AIDS

Clearing out the misconceptions :

HIV is not a disease! HIV is the organism ( virus ) causing the disease whereas AIDS is the disease manifested. HIV is short for HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS.
As the name suggests, it renders the affected individual deficient of immunity and thus , makes one more susceptible to secondary infections. That’s how HIV works, doesn’t itself cause a disease but makes the individual more prone to other infections , thus rendering him morbid. Having said that, this disease is one of the most less understood disease in current times and therefore has an indistinct treatment.

Prevention is therefore the best way of cure. This can be achieved by-

-         Use of condoms:
Condoms have shown effective decrease in the number of HIV infected population , by reducing the transmission at source. Patients infected with HIV , when use a condom
, fail to transmit the virus to the partner, thus decreasing the disease multiplication

-         Pre exposure prophylaxis:
This essentially includes treating individual with an already compromised immunity  can be (acquired/ congenital/ developmental), with anti retroviral drugs. These drugs prevent viral multiplication in the host body and thus provide an effective defense

-         Prevention of vertical transmission :
Meaning prevention of mother to son transmission, this involves treating the mother with antiretroviral therapy during her time of pregnancy, feeding the born child with bottle feed milk instead of breastfeeding, from an infected mother, etc.

-         Effective blood screening programmes:
a    Various institutes today offer blood collection, which is used for blood transfusion, cryo therapy, fresh frozen plasma preparation, etc. A lot of times, these blood collection drives are employed by sub-experienced staff, and this has led to multiple occasions of blood infection, in which HIV has found to be one of the mainstay infections. If this human error could possibly be eliminated, a major chunk of infection can be barred , thus lowering down the AIDS incidence in the nation

-         Tattoos :
Many a times, the tattoo professionals fail to use sterile syringes and this may lead to HIV transmission from an infected person to a healthy one. Thus tattoos are highly disadvocated and even if they’re encouraged, sterility needs to be maintained

These are the basic principles one must keep in mind to prevent transmission of this seriously fatal disease. AIDS is one of the most severely debilitating disease and it’s prevention is the only definite method of cure

The Afterlife After Diabetes

THE AFTERLIFE AFTER DIABETES

Don’t you dare be even seen around sweets anymore! Imagine hearing that for the rest of your life! Not just hearing, implying it too. Once diagnosed as a diabetic, one usually loses majority of his incentive, of LIVING! So many restrictions about food, one feels nothing but helpless and a large number of times , people lose hope too. Those antidiabetic drugs eventually become a headache, to maintain compliance. Negativity is all that dictates one’s life. To guide some optimism to see the light of day, here are some reinforcements one should be encouraging!

   Ø Healthy food choices

Choosing what to eat, when to eat, and how much to eat! These three parameters basically revolve around your good food habits. Having said that, it’s not just a need of the diabetics, but also of the healthy population. The dinner plate should compulsorily involve a salad or a non starchy vegetable like broccoli. Rice should be avoided and a moderate proteinaceous diet should be encouraged at bed time. Loads of water ( not
post meal or right before sleeping ) should be consumed and sweets during the bed time should be discouraged.

Ø Get rid of those tyres

Weight is a bad prognostic factor for diabetes and the earlier you lose those humps, the better it is for your improvement!

Ø Exercise a bit more often!

It won’t hurt a lot to invest half an hour everyday to burn those calories down. Exercise not only helps you lose weight but also increases insulin secretion in your blood, thus decreasing the severity of diabetes.

  Ø Timely medications!

One thing you should NEVER do , when diagnosed as a diabetic, is mistime your medicine consumption. Anti diabetic medicines are meant to lower your blood glucose. They’re usually taken after one’s meal when the blood glucose increases and thus the medicine effectively lowers the much elevated blood sugar. If the drug is taken when there is already no sugar circulating in your blood, the existing minute reservoir of sugar too is degraded and the body is left SUGARLESS! This condition can be highly fatal and can present from a shock, to an unconscious state, which if untreated correctly and immediately, may lead to death.

  Ø Don’t miss those appointments!

The doctor calls you for evaluating your progress , after your medications. The timing is important because the doc can make an assumption about your disease betterment and thus can increase or lower your medical dose. An interruption in the appointment may interfere with the doctor’s judgement of the disease prognosis

  Ø Treat yourself!

Get a diabetic cook book, learn cooking those sugar-free delicious meals for yourself! Allow yourself a treat every once in a while. This will help you stay in track in your healthy lifestyle and enjoy it too!

Eat right, do your squats, read your books!

This could be the shortest elicitable mantra for a healthy diabetic life. With compliant family support and integral core strength, one can change this apparent * living hell * to a place of healthy livelihood!

Story Of A Heart Attack!

HEART SYMPTOMS : YOU SHOULD NEVER   IGNORE

We often come across many situations in our daily life wherein we hear incidences of people, dying of heart problems. Our relatives, close and distant, neighbours, friend's, or any one for that sake, at times bid their goodbye to mother earth, dying of a heart condition. The subject of curiosity is, many of these people, a lot of times, mention occurence of some typical symptoms within them, when they have one such incidence, ofcourse this being spoken for the ones who have managed to survive an attack or any heart condition of the same likes.

Here are a few symptoms which should alarm you about an underlying heart condition :
-      Chest pain : this is the most common presenting symptom of an impending heart attack. The chest  pain can be continuous or maybe be intermittent. Typically, it increases on exertion and is minimal on rest. As described by the patients, it's as if someone's has put one's fist right into their chest, or as if there's a heavy object throbbed into their chest wall. Though not a confirmatory marker of a heart disease, it's occurence is quite a few times associated with heart diseases.

-      Excess fatigue -  especially when you do a little bit of strenuous work, which normally wouldn't have had been a problem, but now presents with excessive gasping. A typical example would be, climbing the stairs. The patient would classically mention this example wherein he / she would normally take those two flights of stairs to work without any discomfort but now prefer taking the elevator because of excess fatigue and breathlessness on climbing .

-      Peripheral bluing -  again, not very specific for heart diseases, but is a definite finding in severe heart diseases wherein the pumping efficiency of the heart is compromised. The heart therefore is unable to pump the oxygenated blood and thus the organs are deficit of the needed oxygen.

-      Chest Pain radiating to left shoulder: this is a very typical finding seen in a patient with heart diseases like angina or an impending heart attack. The pain as described by the patient, starts off from the chest, typically on the left side, and progresses towards the left shoulder tip. It can work out the other way round, too.

-      Syncope- a medical word, translating  to attacks of loss of consciousness, exacerbated by heavy strenuous work, exercise, etc. This happens because the heart, when subjected to extra work, is unable to pump efficient blood to the body, eventually the blood supply to the brain is hampered, and the person loses consciousness

-      Atypical symptoms : they include blurring of vision, acidity, nausea vomiting,  peripheral edema. These symptoms are seen in a lot many other conditions too and thus are highly non-specific.

If one has a feeling he's suffering from majority of these symptoms, he should ideally consult a doctor as soon as possible. Neglecting these events is highly unadvised as they may be the just the tell tale markers, of an impending heart  attack

Ever heard of it, RAPE ANXIETY?

Most women tend to have “rape anxiety” in public. Many of us might not understand this concept, so here I try to explain some feelings and thoughts which can be termed as rape anxiety.

Sometimes, if a woman is walking alone on a deserted path, she may worry that she might get raped. That anxiety can even happen in more low-risk situations, like even walking to work in broad daylight or even when someone rolls down the window of their car to shout something about our bodies.
So now most of you still won’t have any idea about it but a woman experiences this fundamental truth every day. This feeling is shared, to some degree, with most women (and other marginalised people who are threatened in public spaces).

So to all guys out there, you might unintentionally make your counterparts nervous by just being around them in a weird way. It may be uncomfortable to start talking about sexual violence and harassment, but it's so, so necessary for all of us and the most important thing is that a guy should be aware about what his female friend wants him to do when she talks of sexual harassment and violence.

1.      Listen very carefully

It is very important to listen to a female when she speaks be it about whichever topic she talks about (Just listen to avoid pissing her off). Keeping jokes aside and coming to the point, whenever a girl wishes to discuss a sensitive issue with you remember that she trusts you and she confides in you, please be generous and make your ears available for her words. She might just want you to listen and if you have your opinion regarding the issue please put it forth because this might change her view of the world and it too can affect your thinking process as well.

2.     Be aware of your behaviour

It is not always true that if a women looks at you she might be interested in you, maybe she is just glancing at you to make sure that you aren’t a threat. You need to understand the hint that a women is trying to avoid you. Most of the times you are harmful to the opposite gender but maybe your body language and behaviour might drops signals that a woman will perceive to be incorrect. So make sure you are a gentleman.

3.     Use your privilege as a shield

The perpetrators of gendered micro aggression, sexual harassment, and sexual violence aren't strangers — they're the men in your classes, your workplace, your gym and all areas of society. So if you see something wrong happening, please make a move and say something because if you won’t, nobody will. And PLEASE teach your sons, brothers, and friends to do the same.

To an Unmarried Girl in Her 20’s

Every one grows as time passes, from adolescence we reach teenage and then comes the most exciting time our “twenties”. Everyone passes somehow through their teenage though and finally we all enter our “twenties”. That’s when you complete your graduation and decide what next? As a woman now, society gives you the option of marriage, so do you accept it or reject it? The choice is all yours. Other options also lie along the line; Do you pursue your career? Do you live your dream? Do you travel?  And what not you wish to do....

You see your friends falling in love, finding partners, having a fairy tale wedding and what not. It is tempting, but an advice here, don't hurry into falling in love or getting married. It better to stay unmarried, than to live with someone whom you are not in love with. There will be a lot of pressure as you keep growing older every year. But don’t give up until you find the right guy.
The world is a bad place. You need to stay safe and secure. You need to be your own kind of hero. There will always be people around you, expecting you to make sacrifices for them which you might make but only until it doesn't affect your own happiness and health. In difficult times only you can protect yourself. No guy out there is strong enough to fight back for you or protect you when you are attacked.
Everyone grows up by making mistakes, even you made a few. You loved a wrong guy, you got cheated upon, you had a break-up, you slept with a guy, you trusted wrong people, you drank one night and you became bankrupt and what not. But in the end make sure you learn something from all this and that is what will make you a strong person for life. Yes, you made mistakes and accepted them. Big deal! Life teaches lessons and you learn from it.
Early twenties are usually quite emotional and crazy. Nothing seems to be falling in place. But the late twenties get much better. You become wiser, less emotional and tend to get a grip on your life. So, hang in there and enjoy the ride! Do what you love, embrace your feminine energy, love the colour pink, discover yourself, fight back for your rights, receive education and pursue your career, chase your dreams and in the end when you feel like getting married go for it. But for that too, take your time. Take all the time in the world - to make this decision. You know yourself the best and you know what you can deal with.
Remember you are beautiful and kind. Give yourself a chance to find what makes you happy throughout the day to go to bed with a smile on your face. So, breathe positive energy, this is your time after all. You can bring out the best in people just with a smile, it's a gift.  Grow by taking decisions, not by following directions.

PS: Every woman is a superwoman in making, respect her, one day she might come to your rescue.
